You’ve heard it all, but what are you doing about it?! Protecting the environment is not only good for our much-polluted world but can often make great economic sense. Conserving resources and reducing and eliminating waste saves our natural resources and money. It contributes to a healthier planet and can even be a competitive advantage in the marketplace as more and more people want to use green products and services.
Where can you realize the greatest gains or savings? What 20% of your current processes can give you 80% of the benefits you might realize? A few tips:
- Recycle: paper, printing paper (use the flip side), cans, bottles, scrap metal, water, …
- Produce double-sided copies whenever possible.
- Use recycled paper.
- Turn off equipment when not in use: computers AND monitors, printers, other electronic equipment (can reduce energy usage by 25-50%).
- Use suppliers who will take back their packaging for reuse.
- Use email and read on-screen before deciding to print.
- Fix those drips: 1 drop of water per second wastes almost 3,000 gallons per year!
- Donate old equipment such as computers, cell phones and printers.
- Install compact fluorescent bulbs: Changing out 1 60-watt incandescent with a 14-watt fluorescent can save as much as $40 per year in energy costs.
- Use programmable thermostats.
- Consider working from home to save commuting costs.
- Review, analyze, evaluate all your logistics to determine where you can save transportation costs.
These are just a few of the many things you can do. Google “Green business tips” and you will come up with a million ideas. BUT, choose just several you can implement with the least effort and the greatest benefits.
